Democrat Party meltdown in Minnesota... as DFL-endorsed Matt Entenza drops out of MN Attorney General race just 6 hours before filing deadline...

Big surprise! DFL's endorsed candidate for MN Attorney General, Matt Entenza has quit the race and will also not run to retain his seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives where he was Minority Leader.

This is a big plus for Republicans, especially since the deadline for filing occurred less than six hours before Entenza announced he was pulling out of the AG race. Republicans can remind voters of the problems about Entenza's dishonesty, his dirt-digging opposition research against another Democrat contender, and his wife's questionable $30M in stock options and their use.

A few excerpts below, or read it all here.

"Entenza quits attorney general race: Attacks on honesty, wife's stock options fuel move."

"Buffeted by questions about his credibility and by controversy over his wife's multimillion-dollar stock options from a health-care company, DFL endorsee Matt Entenza dropped out of the race for state attorney general Tuesday... less than six hours before the deadline for filing for office, sent shock waves across the state's political landscape. Entenza... does not plan to file to seek re-election to the House, according to a campaign spokesman...

His troubles began with the revelation that he had hired a Chicago opposition-research firm that investigated fellow DFLer Mike Hatch, the current attorney general who is the party's endorsee for governor...

Republicans have capitalized on the spectacle of DFL disunity and they are not through yet... Republican Party Chairman Ron Carey filed a complaint with the Campaign Finance and Public Disclsoure Board, alleging that Entenza's use of personal funds to pay for the research is a violation of state law that requires disclosure of expenditures for political purposes.

"We have seen an unprecedented DFL meltdown," Carey said, "as their candidates serve up more whoppers than Burger King" Carey said Hatch still needs to answer questions, such as how he discovered that Entenza was digging into his record and personal life, and what Entenza was looking for...

State Rep. Jeff Johnson, R-Plymouth, the Republican candidate for attorney general, bluntly accused Entenza not only of changing his story as details emerged, but of outright lying...
Johnson said Entenza initially didn't tell the truth when he told reporters more than a year ago that there was no truth to rumors that he was doing opposition research on Hatch. Johnson also said Entenza has tried to deceive the public on the motive for his research, the extent of the digging and the cost...

A St. Paul attorney... Jennifer Mattson... said she saw an "irreconcilable conflict" in Entenza's pursuit of the attorney general's office which, under Hatch, is investigating $30 million in stock options granted to Quam by UnitedHealth Group, where Entenza's wife is a top executive..."
